With a $250,000 E&S kitchen upgrade on the line, every team needed the week to go smoothly. Naturally, almost nothing went smoothly.

Chantel And Wyatt Suddenly Hit The Front

After losing Monday to their budget blow-up, Chantel and Wyatt looked like they would be spending the rest of the week trying to claw their way back into the pack.

Instead, they somehow became the team everyone else had to chase.

With the Cursio brothers helping them make up lost time, House 2 was the first to begin tiling on Thursday morning. Scott Cam and Shelley Craft found a bathroom that was already looking much further along than several of the others, with a floating timber vanity, large-format beige tiles, a sand-coloured bath and a pared-back powder room.

Wyatt was also feeling confident enough to hand out some time management advice to the other teams, which is bold for someone who, until recently, was still getting comfortable around the tools.

Courtney And Sev Get Stuck

Over in House 4, Courtney and Sev were having the opposite kind of week.

Their bathroom plan was ambitious, with a reworked entry, cavity slider, Velux skylight, floating vanity, timber cabinetry, shower niches, glass screen and bath. On paper, gorgeous. On site, slightly less gorgeous, because by Thursday morning they still had not even had their framing signed off.

The fallout from their trade deal with Rosco was still hanging over them too. Courtney and Sev believed they had handed over their waterproofer in exchange for builders, but the promised help did not arrive when they expected it.

Eventually, Rosco sent carpenter Lachie across to help House 4 move again, but by then the trust between the teams had taken a fairly loud tumble down the stairs.

With their room badly behind, Courtney pushed for a body corporate meeting to extend painting hours. Adam initially seemed reluctant to help rival teams when there was a quarter-of-a-million-dollar prize on the table, but after Jolene left the site, he changed position and voted yes.

The result was unanimous, giving the teams extra painting time and giving Jolene one more reason to be deeply unimpressed when she returned.

Lisa And Rosco Win Big, Then Lose Bigger

Before the bathroom chaos fully swallowed the site, the contestants were sent to Peninsula Hot Springs for the season's first challenge.

Each team had 30 minutes to transform a bare glamping tent into a luxury bedroom retreat. Lisa and Rosco took the win, earning $10,000 cash, an overnight stay in an eco-lodge and a trades "Snooze button" worth another $10,000.

For about five minutes, House 3 had the morale boost it desperately needed.

Then they returned to the bathroom.

Lisa and Rosco had one tiler trying to complete a huge amount of work, and although he was confident, almost everyone else could see the problem coming. Dan had already urged Rosco to get more help, but with the clock running down, the job stayed in one pair of hands.

By the time Dan, Aidan and GMac inspected the floor, the concerns were no longer theoretical. The fall to the waste was wrong, there were gaps, and the tile cuts did not line up.

The floor failed.

That meant the tiles had to come back up, leaving Lisa and Rosco with a brutal recovery job just as the other teams were pushing towards reveal.

The Other Houses Are Not Exactly Cruising Either

Adam and Jolene were still chasing an ambitious onsen-inspired bathroom with kit kat tiles, a bench seat, bath and shower. Scott and Shelley liked parts of the plan, but they were not sold on the decision to remove the toilet door.

Rick and Tayla also had a huge workload ahead of them, with an earthy, tile-heavy bathroom and powder room. Their plans took a hit when two tilers were removed from the site over an insurance issue, leaving Tayla searching the other houses for help.

By episode's end, Chantel and Wyatt looked calmest, Courtney and Sev were still chasing lost time, Rick and Tayla had a mountain of tiling to get through, and Lisa and Rosco had gone from a challenge win to ripping up a failed bathroom floor.

So yes, Family Bathroom Week is doing what Family Bathroom Week does best: making everyone question their life choices under fluorescent lighting.
